Loving Life

We are all still alive here and doing well.  I just don't blog any more. . . sad sad.  No promises of change this time.  But, I will give a quick update on how we're doing.  Our big life vision will become much more clear in about 3-4 weeks when we hear about a position for Preston in seminary and institute!  I CAN'T WAIT!!!  We will be thrilled with anything and it feels so right.  But even if there's no offer, I will still be happy to start planning our next adventure (but I'm not planning on needing to).  It's a great hiring year and everything we've heard suggests that things look good for Preston. Yay!

As far as I am concerned, I can't express my feelings of gratitude to my loving Heavenly Father enough.  I have truly come to feel his guiding power in my life as I tune in to his spirit.  I personally think that coming to Florida was as much for me as for Preston.  I have had to face things outside of my comfort zone and been all but forced to rely on my Heavenly Father when there was no one else around.  Not saying Preston hasn't been a wonderful companion, because of course he has served me as much as possible.  But, there have been times that he just didn't have the capacity to give me what I needed.  You know the saying "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."  That sums up what I have experienced.  However, now that those "worst of times" have been behind me for a while, it's a lot easier to see how it was my refining fire.  Hindsight is 20/20, right?   Anyway, I have just grown into a closer version of the person I want to be.  And now I am more prone to see the ways I am being blessed each day.  It's amazing.  Life is truly beautiful.

Brayden is becoming quite a genuine young man as well.  Of course he's only 3 and still has his 3 year old attitude at times.  But, it's so wonderful to see my efforts in manners, sharing and patience beginning to show.  Listening is another matter. . . we're working on that.  He's not always quick to obey.  Which, is my fault I guess because I used to tell him what we were going to do and then get distracted.  So, he's used to me saying we're leaving and then not leaving for 30 minutes.  Now that I realize that, I'm trying to follow through with things better.  Parenting is hard in that sense.  Kids are learning more than we realize.  The other day, Brayden remembered some little cow cups we have that stir drinks at the push of a button.  We haven't used them in at least a year.  So, I pulled them off the top shelf and gave him some strawberry milk.  The more he stirred it, the more froth there was at the top.  He finally stopped stirring and said, "what is that Mom? Is it coffee stuff?"  You can imagine my surprise that he would relate froth to coffee since we neither drink coffee or are ever around it.  I tried to make it clear that we DON'T drink coffee because it's bad for our bodies. I explained that it is froth and that sometimes coffee has froth, but we do not drink coffee, so it's definitely not coffee stuff.  He seemed to understand, but then would innocently call it "coffee stuff."  Each time I would remind him it's called froth and he would say "yeah, froth."   Haha.  I don't know how kids pick up on everything, but they really see what's going on around them.  In shows and life.  Brayden is also my technology boy.  It just comes naturally to him to use phones, iPods, etc.  His current favorite game on the iPod is temple run and he's getting pretty good.  He will thankfully use educational games too.  But, I'm quickly discovering the need for limited media and the blessing it can be in encouraging good behavior so he can earn media time.  I tell ya, this parenting thing is a full time job with regular overtime!  There is so much to think about and do.

Zander babe is becoming a big kid too.  He is our loud child and always has been.  It's very evident in sacrament meeting that he just doesn't understand what quiet means. He has never once whispered.  I've tried.  He just doesn't do it.  Yet.  But, his speech is incredible!! He can say tons of things and carry on conversation.  He just started praying this week as well.  With help of course, but he'd say the words.  Maybe it's just because Brayden was a little late bloomer when it comes to speech, but Zander seems way advanced to me.  He can tell me when his diaper is messy, what kind of cereal he wants, etc.  He recognizes emotions and always says "sad" when he hears crying.  This morning during breakfast, Brayden mentioned that there are butterflies in our yard and Zander got all sorts of excited talking about "butterflies over there!" while he pointed and jabbered on.  So, I said "oh, is there a butterfly over there?" "YEAH! with flowers."  Suddenly I realized what he was talking about because he had pointed out some flowers on an Easter decoration when I set it up.  I didn't remember a butterfly there, but we all went and looked and he was right!  Incredible.  He also loves to make people laugh or for people to make him laugh.  He will do anything to try to get laughs (unless he's shy in front of new people).  Unfortunately, sometimes his efforts are more on the mean side of teasing.  Like, holding something out for Brayden and then pulling it away.  I see that a lot.  I do have to brag for his sleeping habits though.  He was awful at napping and sleeping at night for a whole year and a little more.  But, now I lay him down for a nap and he'll fall asleep on his own (even when Brayden's there too) and sleep for about 2 hours.  At night I'll lay him down after songs and he'll stay whether he's asleep or not and then sleep until 7:30-8:30.  It's wonderful.

I am just so blessed and believe that we all are, if we only look for it and stop focusing on things that aren't the way we think they should be.   Life can be wonderful if we live wonderfully!

Kiddo update

My biggest struggle with Brayden is no longer tantrums and hitting, but instead it's his constant contradicting.  Whatever Mom or Dad says isn't what he wants.  I takes all I've got to be patient with him when he starts up his contradictions.  It is very trying for me.

Zander is developing his own personality even more and is one loud crazy kiddo.  Haha.  Cute crazy, but crazy.   He gets little bursts of energy and gets what we call his "crazy face."  I would love to snap a picture of it, but it only lasts for the few seconds it takes to find an object/person to takes his energy out on.  Usually it turns in to tackling Mommy :)  but his tackling is fairly nice.  He loves being loud too.  He gets so animated (in volume and expression) when he's talking with you.  He does talk quite a bit too.   He loves trying to surprise or scare people and he always laughs if we scare him.   He does get very dramatic.  He will cry and scream when something gets taken away or you don't do what he's wanting.  We just have to wait it out and ignore it.  The "terrible twos" are beginning :)  They are both beautiful and sweet boys with a whole lot of energy to learn to manage!

Utah was fun, and now we're back

I started this post a month ago... ah well.  Here it is!

I loved being with family, and I even enjoyed playing in the snow.  But, I am so happy to be back in my own home and nice warm weather again :D  Preston said his favorite part about going home was the feeling of realizing we'll be back in Utah in less than a year!  If all goes as planned :)  Which it doesn't seem to do all that often.  So, we'll see.  Brayden and Zander loved seeing family and playing with new toys.  Brayden really loved playing with big cousing Mikayla this year.  They watched Barbie movies on the bunkbed together, used Mikayla's new check-out stand toy, and played with Brayden's toys too.  He is also getting more interested in playing games with us, although not quite ready to actually learn the rules.  Zander loved it too.  It was fun to see my boys and little cousin Makaila play together.  She and Zander are only a couple weeks apart in age and they liked to copy each other.  Although I'm pretty sure there was a little competitive feeling too.  Zander made her cry a few times.  He's turned in to quite a loud child and Kaila is not used to that.  She really liked being with Brayden though.  And he's getting to be a nice little boy who shares with the little ones.  But, we still have struggles every now and then.  I haven't decided if my favorite part was taking Brayden skiing at Solitude (although that was a lot of work!), seeing one of my best old friends (haha, meaning a best friend from the past) get sealed in the temple, or just seeing all the family and friends.  My least favorite part was having both kids get so sick it knocked them out with a fever for a couple days.  They both slept all day.  Yep, that's never happened before.  And it was actually sort of nice. But not at the same time.  You know...

Well, shucks.  I'm blabbing again.  I'll just load up the pictures.  That's what you really want to see anyway.

Our own family "Christmas" before we left for Utah.  Brayden was concentrating hard on the story and remembered almost all of it and performed it again for Grandma and Papa Brown.

Christmas Cookies!

Getting ready to ski

Santa couldn't eat all 25 cookies ;) So, he left a note and saved some for our breakfast!

We borrowed some of Grandy's stockings to use.

Our little Zander Clause again.  They both traded Santa and elf costumes for our different family parties.  They were really both Zander's size, but Brayden still looked good.

And the lovely temple square lights

A shopping cart!!!  What they don't tell you is that you can't take it apart once you put it together. . . we had to leave that toy behind to get later.

a new vacuum for Brayden.  I requested that one!

Zander doing his tricks.  He's quite the little clown.

The busiest weekend I've had in a while, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Brayden!

We made it through our crazy weekend!  Let me just share the big things that were going on. . . Saturday- Messiah practice then dress rehearsal/performance for those without tickets during the day and the Ward Christmas party that night.

Sunday- Speak at a small branch about 30 minutes away, take treats to Brayden's nursery friends, ward choir practice, BRAYDEN's BIRTHDAY!!, The Messiah performance, and taking the harp for prelude/postlude music.

It's harder to put into perspective the business when you just read it, but take my word for it that it was packed and I was slightly worried that Brayden would get slighted of birthday fun again this year.  Luckily, thanks to a lot of prayers and faith, I was not stressed all weekend!!  Even though between the big events we had to find time for writing talks, getting birthday stuff ready and all the normal little things, it all worked out very nicely.

My favorite moment of the weekend was Brayden's excited face when he came out to find his presents on the table (that's how we've been doing it) and the joy he got from each one.  We didn't actually open them until after church since we were rushed to get out in time for our talks, but he didn't seem to mind.  He even loved the birthday cards and was excited about getting money!

My least favorite moment of the weekend was when Brayden tipped my harp over while I was grabbing the cover for it.  Yeah, not good.  But, it didn't break and I wasn't upset with him.  I was very blessed emotionally to not even be worried about it.  But I know it was a miracle that it survived with only a big scratch on the top.  Brayden was very distressed about it too, so I am extra grateful that I could worry more about him than the harp.  But it was still not my favorite time of the weekend.

Here's the pictures to enjoy!!

Brayden got a new McQueen shirt that he wore for the evening.  When I told him I was going to get a picture of it, he had me take a picture of his back first.  Then he said "another one" until I had taken 3 pictures of his back.  Then he let me see the shirt. :)  And I love how he stuck his belly out and everything to show it off.  Too silly and cute.

The one of his back does allow me to share another part of our Saturday - my not-so-great (to be nice to myself) haircut that I gave Brayden.  I just use scissors because our buzzer only has size 1 and 2, which is too short for my B. I cut it in the bathtub because it's easy cleanup, but this time I cut a chunk of the back way too short, so as you can see I had to attempt to even it out and it looks sort of awful.  even the top is not great.  I don't know why I struggled so much this time, but I kinda ruined his hair.  At least it grows back and he doesn't even have a clue.

Brayden loved opening the cards and put his money in a little pile.  It was pretty cute.  He got a nice card and money from his Aunt Kim & Uncle Trip.  Another card and some more money from Grandma and Papa Brown.  And he got TWO birthday cards from great grandma C (a mistake I'm sure. . . we only plan to deposit one check). We gave him a fish that he has named Grandpa.  We added Grandpa Betta.  Haha.  We got him a new garage sale wardrobe too ;)  And his Grandy got him 4 toys!

He played with this gator golf for 20 minutes before he would open another gift.  He was very much in a gator golf zone.
Birthday Breakfast dinner!! Since we didn't have time to do it in the morning, we got our yummy breakfast for dinner and invited Brayden's favorite friends.

It turned out a great birthday for Brayden and a success in everything else!
