We've had a lot of random fun that never got shared, so here it is.
UMBRELLAS
We've had some rainy days here in Florida, so the umbrellas have been thought of and pulled out. It hasn't rained inside yet, but it never hurts to be prepared! :D
PAINT
Brayden got a little pain kit from Auntie Julianna for Christmas and we finally got around to pulling it out during a Zander nap. Brayden LOVED it and was actually pretty good. I let him paint all by himself by the end.
BUBBLEGUM
They got bubblegum in their Easter baskets, but they haven't had much exposure to gum and 2 of the 3 other times Brayden tried it he swallowed it. So, it's been unopened. But, after explaining to them so many times why I didn't think they were ready for bubblegum, they finally talked me into letting them try it. They have been very good at spitting it in the garbage can with a couple exceptions. I did find three barely chewed pieces in the kitchen sink after I took a trip to the bathroom. The pictures below are of them eating bubblegum on the back stairs. Brayden's idea :)
HAIRCUT
I cut Brayden's hair the day after Easter because I felt slightly embarrassed that his hair was so out of control for all the Easter pictures we got. This doesn't really show off the cut so much, but it does show the fact that there was hair all over. Brayden sat very still for me, but didn't want a towel over his shoulders :)
DIY BENCH
I saw an idea on pinterest (of course) to make a bench using a bookshelf type slab of wood. Well, I just so happened to have a bookshelf scrap and a little table I got for free at a yard sale, so I went ahead and made a small bench that would fit the table. I think it turned out cute. It's not perfect, but still pretty cool to see something I made getting used and loved by my cuties.
MARKERS
Thank goodness for washable markers. Zander went to a 2 week phase after discovering our markers that coloring was all he wanted to do. So, he got left alone with just him and the coloring book at times. One morning I helped him draw a circle a few times and then told him to practice. I left the room and was with Brayden in the kitchen when Zander came running out saying "Circle! Circle!!" I assumed he had drawn a circle on his own, but since he was so excited I went to look. Sure enough, he had a drawn a circle! A pretty good one too. I hadn't had experience with the markers on the wall yet, so I was pretty concerned it wouldn't come off, but I had to praise him for his artwork too. So, I told him it was very good and then told him that the wall is a no no for markers. We cleaned it up together using a wet wipe and it luckily came right off! He then got the idea to start testing markers on all the accessible surfaces at the coloring table (the table, his clothes, skin). He has now lost most curiosity and does very well, but he did get pretty good at wiping up marker!

Brotherly Love
Today at the library Brayden came walking out of the baby book area beaming and holding a book about trains. He was in the process of telling me he found a book he wanted to take home when another boy who was probably around the same age or maybe older came around and grabbed it claiming he had found it first. I hadn't seen what happened, but I followed instinct and grabbed onto the book calmly and asked both boys to let go. Brayden was crying saying "No! It's mine," but let go obediently and the other boy held tight saying "I had it first!" Wow.
Isn't it crazy when you're the adult and still don't always know what's best??
Well, I quickly made the decision to let the book go and try to help Brayden find another one. Brayden was of course in tears and the other boy went straight in to the baby room again, set the book down on a rocking chair and left the room. Meanwhile, I was explaining to Brayden that even though I didn't know what happened or whose book it should be, people's feelings are more important than books. Since I had noticed the boy set it down and Brayden had calmed down significantly, I mentioned that he could go grab the book because it was left alone. Of course he was thrilled and the problem was solved. Preston wisely pointed out that even though Brayden let the book go, he did the right thing so he got it back.
What I really loved about the experience was a quick moment that was probably unnoticed by everyone else. Right as I let the boy take the book back, Zander came running over behind the boy saying "No. No. Braydens!" It just made me feel so good seeing him care about Brayden enough to stick up for him. Very precious.
They are becoming very good buddies. I love watching them play together and the way that they create games out of nothing. Brayden calls Zander pet names like "Sweetie pie/sweet heart, Little Buddy, Zandy Babes, and Zander Boy" (which he picked up from me). Zander laughs when Brayden's trying to be silly and gives Brayden the best hugs. And even though he is a HUGE tease to Brayden when it comes to sharing things that he knows Brayden wants, I know he loves him and would look out for him. I got my proof today :)

Loving Life
We are all still alive here and doing well. I just don't blog any more. . . sad sad. No promises of change this time. But, I will give a quick update on how we're doing. Our big life vision will become much more clear in about 3-4 weeks when we hear about a position for Preston in seminary and institute! I CAN'T WAIT!!! We will be thrilled with anything and it feels so right. But even if there's no offer, I will still be happy to start planning our next adventure (but I'm not planning on needing to). It's a great hiring year and everything we've heard suggests that things look good for Preston. Yay!
As far as I am concerned, I can't express my feelings of gratitude to my loving Heavenly Father enough. I have truly come to feel his guiding power in my life as I tune in to his spirit. I personally think that coming to Florida was as much for me as for Preston. I have had to face things outside of my comfort zone and been all but forced to rely on my Heavenly Father when there was no one else around. Not saying Preston hasn't been a wonderful companion, because of course he has served me as much as possible. But, there have been times that he just didn't have the capacity to give me what I needed. You know the saying "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." That sums up what I have experienced. However, now that those "worst of times" have been behind me for a while, it's a lot easier to see how it was my refining fire. Hindsight is 20/20, right? Anyway, I have just grown into a closer version of the person I want to be. And now I am more prone to see the ways I am being blessed each day. It's amazing. Life is truly beautiful.
Brayden is becoming quite a genuine young man as well. Of course he's only 3 and still has his 3 year old attitude at times. But, it's so wonderful to see my efforts in manners, sharing and patience beginning to show. Listening is another matter. . . we're working on that. He's not always quick to obey. Which, is my fault I guess because I used to tell him what we were going to do and then get distracted. So, he's used to me saying we're leaving and then not leaving for 30 minutes. Now that I realize that, I'm trying to follow through with things better. Parenting is hard in that sense. Kids are learning more than we realize. The other day, Brayden remembered some little cow cups we have that stir drinks at the push of a button. We haven't used them in at least a year. So, I pulled them off the top shelf and gave him some strawberry milk. The more he stirred it, the more froth there was at the top. He finally stopped stirring and said, "what is that Mom? Is it coffee stuff?" You can imagine my surprise that he would relate froth to coffee since we neither drink coffee or are ever around it. I tried to make it clear that we DON'T drink coffee because it's bad for our bodies. I explained that it is froth and that sometimes coffee has froth, but we do not drink coffee, so it's definitely not coffee stuff. He seemed to understand, but then would innocently call it "coffee stuff." Each time I would remind him it's called froth and he would say "yeah, froth." Haha. I don't know how kids pick up on everything, but they really see what's going on around them. In shows and life. Brayden is also my technology boy. It just comes naturally to him to use phones, iPods, etc. His current favorite game on the iPod is temple run and he's getting pretty good. He will thankfully use educational games too. But, I'm quickly discovering the need for limited media and the blessing it can be in encouraging good behavior so he can earn media time. I tell ya, this parenting thing is a full time job with regular overtime! There is so much to think about and do.
Zander babe is becoming a big kid too. He is our loud child and always has been. It's very evident in sacrament meeting that he just doesn't understand what quiet means. He has never once whispered. I've tried. He just doesn't do it. Yet. But, his speech is incredible!! He can say tons of things and carry on conversation. He just started praying this week as well. With help of course, but he'd say the words. Maybe it's just because Brayden was a little late bloomer when it comes to speech, but Zander seems way advanced to me. He can tell me when his diaper is messy, what kind of cereal he wants, etc. He recognizes emotions and always says "sad" when he hears crying. This morning during breakfast, Brayden mentioned that there are butterflies in our yard and Zander got all sorts of excited talking about "butterflies over there!" while he pointed and jabbered on. So, I said "oh, is there a butterfly over there?" "YEAH! with flowers." Suddenly I realized what he was talking about because he had pointed out some flowers on an Easter decoration when I set it up. I didn't remember a butterfly there, but we all went and looked and he was right! Incredible. He also loves to make people laugh or for people to make him laugh. He will do anything to try to get laughs (unless he's shy in front of new people). Unfortunately, sometimes his efforts are more on the mean side of teasing. Like, holding something out for Brayden and then pulling it away. I see that a lot. I do have to brag for his sleeping habits though. He was awful at napping and sleeping at night for a whole year and a little more. But, now I lay him down for a nap and he'll fall asleep on his own (even when Brayden's there too) and sleep for about 2 hours. At night I'll lay him down after songs and he'll stay whether he's asleep or not and then sleep until 7:30-8:30. It's wonderful.
I am just so blessed and believe that we all are, if we only look for it and stop focusing on things that aren't the way we think they should be. Life can be wonderful if we live wonderfully!

Potty Training
Just wanted to let you all know that the potty training has continued progressing, but little bits at a time. Mostly because I haven't even offered underwear to Brayden most days lately. We're leaving for a month and a half on Friday, so I kinda figured I should wait for after that to get this training done. Plus, we only have 3 of the good training underwear from Gerber (definitely recommend! They don't leak into the pants easily!). But, we've had some great successes to share too!
Brayden went grocery shopping with me in underwear and couldn't have any wets in the toilet before we left. It had been around 2 hours since he'd gone, so I was pretty worried! But, when we literally had one item left to grab he started doing some whining and then it hit me that he was in underwear (still adjusting!), so I asked if he needed to go. He always says no until he just can't hold it anymore, so I was figuring I should probably head up toward the bathrooms. Sure enough a minute later Brayden said something about going to the bathroom. So, I zoomed into the family restroom with the boys and got Brayden on the big toilet (for his first time) and didn't have many options for Zander- he was on the floor. Disgusting I know. You better believe I washed his hands too. Anyway, Brayden totally went in the toilet and was so thrilled! We went and picked out a treat, got the eggs we needed and then went to check out. After checking out he said "I need to use bathroom again." So, I took him in again because I knew he also probably needed to go number 2 (we call it his "messies"), but the family restroom was locked, so we used the handicap stall. Turns out they have an infant seat in that one. Way better! So, if you're ever at the Walmart on Monroe with 2 kids, use the normal bathroom. Oh yeah, and as soon as he sat down he said "no more pushes. All done."
That same day he took a nap in his underwear and when he woke up after a 2 hour nap I could've sworn he was dry. I tried to feel and couldn't feel anything, but when we went into the bathroom 15 minutes later (when he was awake enough) his underpants were a little damp. I was still impressed and he still used the toilet, but it wasn't a complete success.
We have yet to overcome having his "messy" in the toilet. He doesn't want to try. He asked me for a diaper one time because he was so desperate to push. But, he cried when I brought up the toilet. I dropped it and gave him a diaper. Silly kiddo.
I'm very impressed and relieved at this whole potty training deal with Brayden! He doesn't even ask for a treat anymore! He's getting big.
